Halloween Shows What A Great Place To Live Boca Raton Is

Since moving down here to Boca Raton about 13 years ago I am always amazed at how big Halloween is celebrated here.  Being from up in NY, Halloween was a time for kids to go get candy and older youths to do acts of mischief. But here in Boca Raton Halloween is a time for the community to come together. It is a great time to say hello to old friends, make new friends and enjoy our beautiful weather.

With Halloween falling on a Saturday, this year was no different.  My kids are old enough to go out trick or treating themselves, so my husband and I set up a couple of chairs, a snack table, a bowl of candy and pitcher of pink lemonade (adult style).  We hung up our Halloween decorations and festive lights and waited for the good times to roll.

Sure enough as soon as the sun went down the people came out.  We were quickly surrounded by many little boys and girls dressed in some adorable costumes looking for candy. We gave each of them some sweets and complemented them on their costumes. We offered the parents our adult pink lemonade. This went on for a while and as the evening went on we started having longer and longer conversations with the adults.  We met a couple who just moved into our neighborhood about a month ago. They wound up staying for a few hours, as we introduced them to many of the neighbors how stopped by for a drink and to chat.

The kids kept coming some barely able to walk (some even in strollers), others teenagers that we know through our children. Some with their parents, some came with their dogs, most with their friends.  Before you knew it, besides candy we were giving out bottles of cold water from our refrigerator to thirsty trick-or-treaters. One young teenage girl in a beautiful costume came by and said she didn't want candy but the boots she was wearing on her costume were killing her feet and she wanted to know if she could "borrow" a pair of socks. Of course we went in and gave her a pair. Within a few hours we had refilled the big candy bowl 4 times, gone through 5 pitchers of adult pink lemonade and a case of cold water.

Before you knew it, we actually had quite a crowd in our driveway just catching up on everything.  Then a Palm Beach Sheriff's Deputy on bicycle rode by and he stopped for a cold bottle of water.  He was riding around the neighborhood just making sure everything was OK. There were literally hundreds of people walking in and around our neighborhood.  Children from babies to teens, everyone having a great time.  There was not one incident of any misbehavior.  Finally by about 9:30 we closed up shop in the driveway and moved poolside with a few of our neighbors to finish the pink lemonade and chat.

Pretty soon both of my own sons came home saying what a great Halloween they had and all of their friends they had seen.  It was just another great holiday down here in Boca Raton.

I told my husband that Halloween may be one of the greatest holidays to celebrate here in Florida.  Anyone thinking of moving here should really experience Halloween in Boca Raton to see first hand what a great place this is to live.

One day, my husband and I hope to retire to Boca Raton especially after this wonderful picture you just presented in words of community life. I am from CT and taxes and the overall rat race is one we'd like to escape. When we can, I will ask for your assistance. Lori Torello
